Bicycles seem to be everywhere these days, including on sidewalks, where they shouldn’t be. Most cyclists seem to observe the rules of the road. https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/newyorkcity/latest/NYCrules/0-0-0-102231 However, as most of us know who walk around here, there are many cyclists who ride on sidewalks, go the wrong way on streets or bike lanes, ride through red lights, don’t even use bike lanes when they’re nearby or ride at breath-taking speeds.
It’s pretty unnerving to go for a walk and find it’s an experience out of the movie “Hunger Games”.
I recently read an article about Hilda Jaffe, 102 years old, or a “superager.” https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/centenarian-thrives-living-alone-older-adults/
Hilda credits her longevity to being active, resilient, positive, connected to family and friends, among other things. She eats well and sleeps an average of 8 hours a night. She’s extraordinary in her independence and mobility. Even her primary care doctor remarked that she was “the only centenarian who walks in without an assistant or a cane. [She’s] off the charts.”
However, the article ends with this comment from Hilda on the future:
“My joke is I’m going be done in by a bicycle delivery person cutting through a pedestrian crosswalk.”
Good luck to you, Hilda, and to the rest of us for that not to happen.
