There are many articles about the benefits of being an optimistic person to both your mental and physical health https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2894461/. In fact, “thinking positively” to stay healthy and live longer was one of “The 7 Keys to Living Longer and Healthier,” according to a recent article in The New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/04/well/live/live-longer-health.html. Bottom line: think positively!
I’m not predisposed to be particularly optimistic, and these are certainly trying times to test our optimistic mindset. However, as we get older, we don’t need to put our finger on that side of the scale that would increase any physical or mental problems that come with aging by being pessimistic.
So my new mindset is to try to be optimistic to stay healthy and live longer, even if current events are deeply worrisome. The rational part of me supporting this optimistic effort points out that even if all my fears come about, by thinking that they won’t, I’m staying healthier to deal with the consequences.
